Kelsale Lychgate
Grade II* Listed
The project to restore the Lychgate which had fallen into total disrepair was funded by donations and grants from English Heritage. The Lychgate was designed by Arts and Crafts Architect E S Prior and is purported to be one of the finest Arts and Crafts structures in the country. The Lychgate was commissioned by the local rector in memory of his deceased wife around 1890.
Works included carefully dismantling the Lychgate roof structure, repair and replacement of structural timbers, splitting new roof battens from locally sourced trees, replacement of 2000 new handmade roof tiles to match in with the existing salvaged tiles which were secured with 8000 hand carved oak pegs, re-carving of front fascia and niche and stone repairs to base.

This was an unusual contract for Period Property Services Limited which was financed by Heritage Lottery funds and Felixstowe Council. We were involved from the initial advisory stages through to the end liaising with the council and main contractors. The awards were presented in conjunction with main contractors.
We undertook restoration of all the major stone and flint water features in each of the gardens and all the garden rockery walls.
The Main Garden long wall and Lampstand bases throughout the gardens had severely deteriorated and we were asked to restore these elements. In order to do this, we fabricated moulds to match original stones which were on site, these were then cast, with the inclusion of crushed shells and then aged. Each stone was hand made to match its original counterpart, we then rebuilt the entire wall. The same process was used for the Lampstand bases.
